Itinerary:
This is a ten mile in and out night hike.  We will see our way by the light of the moon.  Though we will have flashlights with us in case we need them, we should not have to use them.  This hike is just over an hours drive North on 75 from the park and ride.

We will start the hike at around 6:00, just before sunset at 6:30.  By 7:15 it should be nearly dark from the sun, but by then, the moon will have risen high enough for us to see by the moonlight.

Our eyes will have acclimated to the low light, and we should be able to see the trail just fine.  The moon will be nearly full, at 98%.  That will give us enough light to see some colors, and to be able to read large print.

We start the hike with a short climb to the ridge top of Mill Creek Mountain.  Most of the hike will be along this ridge.  Here we will be able to see city lights in the distance in several directions.  We will have our supper here on the ridge or down in the cove, depending on the wind.

We then descend into a cove and reach Swamp Creek where we turn around.  We won't see any city lights from here, just the night forest.  The trip back will be more of the same, but with the moon higher in the sky.

We should be back to trailhead by 11:00, and then back to the park and ride somewhat past midnight.

We hope for clear skies, but we can still do this hike if it is clouded over.  If it is calling for much rain though, it is a no-go.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $42.92 (calculated at total miles (116) * $0.370, effective Friday, September 10, 2010). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.370 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver).
For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $10.73 Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
