OK! Sorry for the short notice, but due to weather and various winter colds, this was the only weekend I could get this on the schedule. I've moved everyone over from the first trip; please remove yourself if you can not attend. Due to the last minute nature of this event, I won't count a no show for those on the original event if you don't make it.
From cancelled event: Sorry we had to postpone... darn snow and ice!!! We'll do our best to reschedule this event for another day in February.
We will move everyone on the current list to the next trip (once we figure out a date); please remove yourself if you can't go. I'll try to get other TL's to lead the same event so everyone can have a chance to Hike n' Slide! (Any interested TL, please contact me-- Pam).
Ready to say goodbye to crazy holiday shoppers? Ready for a fun winter adventure? Want to get away from it all and feed your need for speed? Well, grab an inner tube, let the ski lift pull you up, and then hold on for the ride of your life! That is, AFTER a nice little hike.
Our day will see us depart the Indian Trail park n' ride at 9:30am sharp. We'll arrive at the Osage Overlook parking area around 1130am. Our hike will depart north from the overlook to 4,804 foot Scaly Mountain. The views from the top will be your well-earned reward for the 2 mile 1,000 foot climb in the two miles from the overlook. Scaly mountain features at least four granite outcrops from which you can view the valley below and the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains. Here we'll have snacks and enjoy the views before heading back down.
Next we'll take the short drive to the Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center where we'll spend two hours going down the slopes. BE SURE TO BRING $22!! This covers your time on the slopes, tube and lift.
After a fun day of hiking and Tubing in NC, we are sure to work up an appetite. We'll finish the day with a special treat, dinner at the Lodge BBQ & Trout House... made warmer by our own libations (that's right people, we can bring our own wine and beer. However, please note that drivers will be limited on consumption)! The Lodge serves fresh, homemade food, including NC BBQ and fresh trout from their own trout pond. I'm told this place offers specialty homemade pies that are to die for!
The prices for appetizers and dinner look pretty reasonable, about $10 for a BBQ plate that includes two side dishes and Texas toast, and the fish dishes start at $10. You can use this url to view the menu:

Please note, this trip is marked a D3. If you have never hiked before, this is probably not the best hike for you, unless you are in excellent condition and have the appropriate gear. (Yes, it's going to be COLD!) In order to make it to the snow tubing place on time, we'll need to keep a fairly brisk pace. If you have any questions on whether you should attempt this as a first time event, feel free to sign up, then email me with any questions. If you determine this isn't the event for you, you can always remove yourself so that someone else may sign up. |

Required Items to Bring:
*Layer up! Try a thin base layer and go up from there as needed. I highly recommend a wicking base layer. It's not good to be wet and cold. A wicking base layer will get the moisture off your skin so you can stay warmer *Warm hat and/or balaclava *Warm socks (wool keeps you warm, even if it gets wet!) *2 liters of water *Money for gas, breakfast (if you want), tubing, and dinner *Snacks for the hike | | Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need. *Moisture-repelling outer layers *Waterproof gloves *Scarf *Water proof or water resistant hiking boots should be fine, but if you have more appropriate "winter" gear, feel free to bring it *Change of clothes for dinner & the ride home *Electrolyte replacement *Hiking poles | |

| Carpool Cost: | |
Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $81.40 (calculated at total miles (220) * $0.370, effective Friday, September 10, 2010). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.370 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver). For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $20.35 Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
