Please read the entire page before registering for this event.

We will leave the carpool location no later than 8:00 AM, so please arrive earlier. From there, we will head to Dahlonega, where we will take a quick break, and then drive directly to the Byron Reece Memorial parking area (see directions), which is where the trailhead is located.

The total distance for this hike is about 13 miles with an about 3100 feet of total elevation gain.

The plan is to hike as one group and stay within close range. Our speed will be moderate and will vary depending on the terrain. This is not going to be a fast hike, but you need to have recent D5 experience and be able to hike at a moderate pace to keep up with the group.

We will start hiking at 9:30 AM, taking the Byron Reece access trail south until it intersects with the Applachian Trail at Flatrock Gap. From there, we will take the AT east towards Neels Gap. After crossing the road at Neels Gap and taking a short five-minute break, we will continue east on the AT until we get to Cowrock Mountain, where we will have lunch. After lunch, we will head back, retracing our steps. On our way back, we will stop for a little bit at Neels Gap before continuing west on the AT, and taking the Byron Reece trail back to our cars.

We will meet next to the trailhead in the Byron Reece Memorial parking area. This parking lot is located on US-19, about 0.5 miles north of Neels Gap, on the left side of the road.
