Itinerary:

 

Join us for a challenging adventure as we find a new route to Rabun Bald. If you love exploring the woods, you will enjoy this hike!

Our hike will begin at a small cemetery near Ducks Nest Gap. We will hike a short distance along a road and then head up to Rabun Bald on Big Ridge. We will be hiking along an "unmaintained" path so we may encounter fallen logs, dense rhododendron, a few creek crossings and other obstacles.

We will follow Big Ridge for several miles, making a short stop at an overlook along the way. We will eventually hit the Bartram Trail just a few hundred yards from Rabun Bald. We’ll eat lunch after we reach the lookout tower on top of Rabun Bald. Then we will hike down the Three Forks trail for a short distance before branching off to head down Sarah's Creek valley along what's probably an unmaintained trail and eventually an old logging road.

We plan to make this a shuttle hike, but the loop will depend on whether we can leave a car near Sarahs Creek Campground. If not, we'll hike back down Big Ridge the way we went up and return to our starting point by the cemetery.

On this hike, we will gain 2,650 feet of ascent and hike between 8.5 and 9 miles. Be prepared for possible deadfalls, unmaintained trails, and possibly some off-trail hiking. There may be on or two creek crossings near the end of the hike.
