Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
Come join me for a hike that is new to me that covers familiar trails and landmarks! We will start at the Byron Reece trailhead and hike the Byron Reece trail to Flat Rock Gap, where we join the Appalachian Trail and hike to Blood Mountain. After pausing to enjoy some of the best views in Georgia, from the highest point on the Georgia AT, we will continue down the AT until turning onto the Slaughter Creek trail. We will descend the Slaughter Creek trail to Lake Winfield Scott, where we will take our lunch break. After lunch by the picturesque lake, we will take the Jarrod Gap trail to Jarrod Gap, and continue on the Jarrod Gap trail to the AT. We will take the AT back to Blood Mountain, briefly soaking in the beautiful views, before heading down the Byron Reece trail back to our cars. This hike covers classic trails, fantastic views from Blood Mountain, and the peaceful descent with numerous stream crossing on Slaughter Creek trail. These are some of my favorite places to hike in Georgia. I expect to hike about 12.3 miles and climb 3,700 feet, according to GaiaGPS. I haven't strung these trails together exactly like this before, so I'm calling it exploratory. The actual distance and climbing may be somewhat higher or lower than stated, so bring your sense of adventure!

Carpool Cost: | ![]() | Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $51.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
