Itinerary:

Quick escape to the 4K mountains! These are the closest 4000-foot peaks to Atlanta. We will meet at the Stanley Gap Parking Area and take an out-and-back hike along a 4WD road. Along the way, we pass close to the summit of three 4000-plus-foot peaks, including Rich Mountain. We won't be attempting a summit since it requires bushwhacking for all 3 mountains. Usually, the 4WD road is closed to traffic outside hunting season. However, the road becomes very rugged further up the climb, and I've seldom seen a vehicle on the road, let alone along the last several miles. Consider it a nice, wide trail through the mountains. The 4WD road, unlike most trails, generally ascends rather than following the typical up-and-down roller coaster pattern that one finds on many trails. A couple of creeks cross the road, but it should be easy to find a way to keep your feet dry. Along the way, we will bypass the summits of Big Bald and Little Bald Mountain. The total ascent for this hike is 2729 feet.
