Georgia Triple Crown

The Georgia Triple Crown is a favorite AOC hike among seasoned, consistent D5ers wanting to push the limit and a beloved of regular D6ers. Great for training or just testing your current fitness. It will challenge and thrill all of us.

We will hike the Coosa Backcountry loop trail and add on the summits of Coosa Mountain and Blood Mountain. Starting at Vogel State Park visitors center, the trailhead is very close. Do not let the gentle start fool you, its about to get real . As we start the 4.7 mile, endless ascent of Coosa Mt. you will question if you were in your right mind to sign up. LOL.

After the summit and a snack, we get back on the trail, have a nice descent and then we have to tackle the beast that is Slaughter Mountain. Expletives are not only allowed, they may be actively encouarged. You will have deserved your lunch at this point.

The descent of Slaughter is welcome at this point and we rock hop across a few streams. Then the Duncan Ridge Trail peels off of the loop trail, we stick to the DRT and head for our third summit, Blood Mt. After Blood, we take the long descent back to our cars to complete our epic loop adventure.

This is a difficult D6 hike with 4700 feet of gain, additionally a pace of 2.5 to 2.7 mph will be maintained on this difficult trek. Recent D6 experience is preferred  to join the fun. Hikers with recent, consistent D5 experience who feel ready for the challenge will be considered as the pace will be slightly more moderate than past events. I am anticipating an overall pace of 2.5 mph. Its a lot of up, so this is still a hard hike. We will stay loosely together, regrouping often, especially at the top of the mountains.
