Chickamauga NBFP - Chattanooga Hike 3 of 3

This is the third of three hikes I am leading in the Chattanooga area. These hikes can be done as individual hikes where you drive from the Atlanta area or stay the night in Chattanooga. All the hikes will start at 10:00 am, giving you time to drive up.

The hike is an Exploratory Hike because I did this hike once by myself in August of 2019. It has now been seven years.

We will meet at the Visitor Center parking lot for introductions and a restroom stop. We will hike the Red Trail Loop clockwise to get us to the 7.7 mile distance. We will not go down and up Lookout Moutain. We will stop at several of the marks as we hike, thus making the distance a little longer than stated.

This is not a beginner’s hike.

I have directions from the Embassy Suites Chattanooga Downtown for those staying the night and from I75 for those driving up in the morning.

Get on US-27 S 3 min (0.9 mi)

 Head toward W 4th St 197 ft

 Turn right onto W 4th St 0.1 mi

Use the left 2 lanes to take the exit toward US-27 S 0.1 mi

 Use any lane to take the Martin Luther King Blvd exit toward I-24/State Hwy 27 0.6 mi

Continue on US-27 S to Fort Oglethorpe 14 min (8.0 mi)

 Merge onto US-27 S 0.8 mi

Use the left 3 lanes to merge onto I-24 E toward Atlanta/Knoxville 1.7 mi

 Take exit 180B to merge onto US-27 S/Rossville Blvd Continue to follow US-27 S Pass by AutoZone Auto Parts (on the right in 2 mi) Entering Georgia 5.5 mi

Continue on Lafayette Rd to your destination 4 min (1.1 mi)

 Continue onto Lafayette Rd 1.0 mi

 Turn right 400 ft

 Turn right Destination will be on the right 207 ft

From I75, my house in Marietta:

Follow I-75 N to GA-2 W in Ringgold. Take exit 350 from I-75 N 1 hr 11 min (82.6 mi)

 Merge onto I-75 N 1.5 mi

 Continue straight to stay on I-75 N 80.9 mi

 Take exit 350 for GA-2/Battlefield Parkway 0.2 mi

 Use the left 2 lanes to take the ramp to Ft Oglethorpe/Convenant Coll 128 ft

Continue on GA-2 W to your destination in Fort Oglethorpe 14 min (7.2 mi)

 Use any lane to turn left onto GA-2 W 3.2 mi

 Turn left onto Dietz Rd 0.8 mi

 Turn right onto Reeds Bridge Rd 3.0 mi

 Turn left onto Lafayette Rd 440 ft

 Turn right 400 ft

 Turn right Destination will be on the right 207 ft

The website shows that it is free to enter this park. I am surprised by this since most NPS parks are now charging an Entrance greater than the $5.00 the NPS parks in the Atlanta area charge. I recommend you bring your America the Beautifull pass or be prepared to buy a daily entrance pass.

I don’t plan on posting this as a carpool event. I plan on diving to Chattanooga on Thursday, 10/29 and leaving Marietta between 3pm and 4 pm. If you want to stay for all three events, you can ride up with me.
