Itinerary: | |||||||
This will be another opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Spring in north Georgia, which typically reaches it's peak a couple of weeks later than we do in Atlanta. Of course, we'll also look to get a good workout. Using a combination of the Yellow Mountain Trail, the Shope Gap Trail and the Mills Shoals Creek Trail, we'll cobble together a nice loop in the Cooper Creek Wildlife Management Area. We'll add a little distance to the loop by including a detour to Addie Gap at Chestnut Mountain. After completing the featured loop, we'll walk the 1.7 mile Eyes On Wildlife Trail. We'll then hike the one mile (each way) Old-Growth Forest Trail. Note that this trail is not maintained. Reportedly, we will pass the oldest tree in the Chattahoochee National Forest, and will see Tulip trees with circumferences exceeding 15 feet. People more knowledgeable than I have estimated that some of these trees may be more than 500 years old! The total distance of the hike will be approximately 11.2 miles with approximately 800 feet of elevation gain. We will hike at a moderate pace, with a limited number of rest stops. We will take a nice break to eat our light lunches. Following the hike, we will stop in Dahlonega for dinner. If you have a committment that requires you to be back in Atlanta at a certain time, this hike may not be a good fit for you. Disclosure: Your TLs, who enjoy exploring new places (to them, anyway) have not hiked these trails. Therefore, please have a sense of adventure and be in sufficient physical condition to hike extra mileage if we miss a turn somewhere.

Carpool Cost: | ![]() | Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $64.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
