The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many mtns that make for superb hikes and offer incredible views. For this series, we are counting down the highest peaks in GA...

#5 - Tray Mountain

At 4430' above sea level and with 1481' of clean prominence, Tray Mountain is the 2nd highest mtn on the Appalachian Trail in GA and a favorite of dayhikers and backpackers alike.

We will start our trip at Unicoi Gap with a steep climb up Rocky Mountain and then desend into Indian Grave Gap and then a 400 foot climb to the Cheese Factory then on to Tray Mountain Shelter then descend to Swag of the Blue Ridge then on to Sassafras Gap and our camp for the night. The next day (Sunday) we will back track to Unicoi Gap. This hike requires some steep climbs, please be in shape.

hiking boots or trail shoes

tent

sleeping pad

sleeping bag at least rated at 20* it gets very cold in the Mountains

From carpool parking lot take I-85 North to I- 985 toward Gainesville to exit 24 Ga Hwy 369 take left toward Ga Hwy 129 continue to follow Ga 129 for about 25 miles pass Hwy 75 to 75A take right (this will by pass Helen) 75A will run back into 75 turn left about 8 miles you will see sign for Appalachian Trail Unicoi parking will be on your right.

Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $61.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
