Itinerary: | |||||||
Join us for a casual hike around historic downtown Atlanta while we explore nationally recognized and historically important sites. We will start our walk at the Historic Oakland Cemetery, and officially end it at the same location, prior to entering the Cemetery. That weekend, the Historic Oakland Cemetery is hosting a special event that will give us opportunity to refresh ourselves post-hike with music, food and SPIRITS! Plan to meet at the southeast cemetery entrance on Memorial Drive, directly across from the restaurant, Six Feet Under. After introductions and a quick briefing we will hike from the Cemetery to Dr. King's original gravesite and current tomb. We will pass by his boyhood home, Ebenezer Baptist Church and historic Fire Station No. 6 - one of the South's first desegregated fire houses. From there, we will head towards Krog Street to view the Tunnel Street Art, walk to and through Cabbagetown Park, then finally head back towards the meet-up spot, at the Memorial Dr. Cemetery Entrance. The total hiking distance is 2.8 miles and we'll be taking a slower pace than most hikes. Parking should be available since we're starting before the cemetery's event, but if it's nearby, you may want to consider riding MARTA to the King Memorial Station. There is also plenty of street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Planned route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=212006312667713835489.0004bd5e7ad8c46981016&msa=0 Optional post-AOC-event paid social: "Sunday In The Park" Join us if you'd like after the urban hike at the Historic Oakland Cemetery for a Victorian street festival. Details on the festival below. Historic Oakland Foundation is proud to present the 33rd annual Sunday in the Park from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7. The Victorian street festival began in 1979 and offers fun, food, and entertainment for all ages. Enjoy a memorable afternoon of delicious food from Six Feet Under, The Varsity, Pallookaville and more. There will be a variety of live musical entertainment, an artists market, living history demonstrations, storytellers, Irish dancers and much, much more. Don’t miss your opportunity to enter some of the magnificent mausoleums! Guests are encouraged to participate in the Victorian costume contest and photography contest. Carriage tours and free walking tours will be offered. The suggested donation is $5 per person. Parking: $5. http://www.oaklandcemetery.com/sundayPark.html All proceeds benefit Historic Oakland Foundation. Payment will be direct to the Cemetery, not the AOC. Bring your blanket or lawn chair if you want to hang out! No coolers or outside food allowed. About the Oakland Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery is a 48-acre Victorian-style garden cemetery founded in 1850. It is one of the largest park spaces and significant cultural sites in metro Atlanta. Among the approximately 70,000 interred at Oakland are: Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell and golf great Bobby Jones, a number of former Atlanta mayors including Maynard Jackson, six former governors, the unmarked graves of paupers, Confederate and Union soldiers, a Jewish section, and an African American section. The grounds of the cemetery are an example of the 19th-century landscape idea of a cemetery-park and provide an ideal setting for its profusion of Victorian cemetery art. | |||||||
