Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary. | |||||||||||||||||
Itinerary: | |||||||||||||||||
Carpool departure at 9:45 am. Let's go for a 2 mile leisurely hike at Dellinger Park and visit the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville. We will walk the outer loop of the park. After our walk we will drive 3 miles to the museum in downtown Cartersville and purchase our tickets. The tickets are $10 but we have a coupon for a $2 discount per ticket. Please thank Bobby Marie for the coupons the next time you see him. The cafe in the museum will be closed during our visit in preparation for the Gala that evening. Swheat Market Deli is 2 blocks from the museum and we will walk to lunch as a group or when you get hungry. At 1:30 pm there will be a 60 minute guided tour by a Docent. The Docent will guide us on a highlights tour of the permanent exhibits & then we will have an additional half-hour for revisits to galleries the Docent may have just hit on, temporary exhibits or to the Store, etc. If you choose not to go on the tour you may just explore the museum during this time. The tour should be finished by 2:30 pm. We will head back to Atlanta at 3:00 pm and plan to be back to the car pool at 4:00 pm.
Dellinger Park, 100 Pine Grove Road, Cartersville, consists of 111 acres and is the location of the main office for the Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department. We will hike the outter loop trail for 2.1 miles. A two-story sculpture court, two authentic stage coaches, and more than 200 Native American artifacts round out the story of the historic American West. Cameras are welcome at Booth Western Art Museum for private, non commercial use only. Photography is not permitted in special exhibitions or areas designated as “No Photography.” Flashes, video cameras, monopods and tripods are prohibited. Photographs cannot be published, sold, reproduced, transferred, distributed, or otherwise commercially exploited in any manner whatsoever.
There are many exhibits. Here are a few you will see:
While capturing extreme perspectives of the West, these photographs also create an accurate and compelling pictorial history of Western expansion, including Native American culture and conservation efforts. A National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West companion book, featuring 125 photographs that have been rarely or never published before, will be on sale at the Booth Museum store.
Heading West – Here you will see an authentic stagecoach Civil War Gallery This tragic war has been a subject for artists since the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter in April 1861. Today artists such as Don Troiani, Mort Künstler, Rick Reeves, David Wright, J.N. Muir, and Brad Schmell continue to portray the war’s defining moments in stunning paintings and sculpture. They depict the heroism, glory and tragedy of this struggle of brother against brother. The paintings hang in chronological order to help us understand the battles as they occurred.
Much of our knowledge of these remarkable leaders can be found in letters they sent to their opponents, acquaintances and family members. In these letters, we obtain a glimpse of American history from a truly unique perspective. We are able to see these men as they were. From the compassion of Abraham Lincoln to the playful correspondence of John F. Kennedy, these letters help to humanize the men we have chosen to lead our country. Booth Western Art Museum has in its collection a one-page, signed letter from each President. The original letters are on exhibit, along with portrait photographs of each president and a variety of presidential memorabilia.
