Itinerary:

     Are you ready to take on an a D5?  Then this will be the perfect mountain hike for you.  This 14 mile loop starts in Cheaha State Park on the Cave Creek trail, then follows the Odom trail briefly to connect with the Pinhoti Trail in the Talladega National Forest for the return trip. There is a variety of flora, fauna, rock formations, and scenery (including the wrackage of a plane crash from 1972). The first part of the loop is flat and rocky while the Pinhoti side of the loop has a couple of great overlooks. Parts of the Pinhoti trail cross challenging boulder fields, so appropriate hiking boots and poles are highly recommended. We'll stop for snacks/lunch at one of the overlooks on the trail. Total elevation gain for the entire hike will be approx. 3,200' - so while this is a great hike for those ready to try a D5, it is definitely NOT a hike for beginners.  Including driving time, this event will be about 8 hours.

     *If you are driving to the event, please realize that the start time of 8:30 AM is Central time!  But I highly recommend riding along with the carpool as it is just over an hour drive and so much fun!

    **Once we return to the carpool location, we may even decide to enjoy a celabratory pizza together at Johnny's New York Style Pizza - optional of course!

     Parking will be at the Cheaha trailhead after a stop at the Cheaha park office - which is just 1/2 mile past the trailhead. From Atlanta area - follow Interstate-20 into Alabame then take exit # 191. Turn South on U.S. Highway 431 for approximately four miles, then turn on the access road to get to Highway 281 South to the Park, go 13 miles on 281.(Watch for the Cheaha Resort State Park Signs).

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $52.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
