Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

This event is a companion piece to Angela's Perseids meteor shower event.  I plan to get there early to enjoy the sunset from the summit area, so anyone who would like to join me is welcome to, and then you can either stay for meteor shower, or head home if you like.

Sunset is at 8:27 and we will try to start heading up the trail at about 7:15.   I plan to hike up slowly, but everyone can go at their own pace.  It is only 1/2 mile trail, but it gains about 430 feet, so that is fairly steep.  Still, it is only about 2/3 of the elevation gain of Stone Mountain, so not difficult if you are even in light D2 shape ....or even D1 shape if you really take your time.

Brasstown Bald is the tallest mtn in GA at an elevation of 4784 feet.  From the summit, you enjoy magnificient panoramic views and can see Rabun Bald (2nd tallest GA mtn), Tray Mtn, Blood Mtn, Mount Yonah, and Clingmans Dome in the Smokies to the north.   And it's the coolest place in GA in the summer, especially when there is a nice breeze up there.  So a splendid place to view a lovely sunset.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

From Blairsville, Georgia take US 19 & 129 south for 8 miles. Turn left (east) onto Georgia 180. Go 9 miles to Georgia Spur 180 and turn left (north). Go 3 miles to the Brasstown Bald parking lot.

Please note, some GPS units may display an incorrect location for Brasstown Bald since there is no physical address for the facility.  But if you get on 180 then you will eventually get to it and easy to see where to turn to drive up the road.  It is very steep road, and will put a strain on an older vehicle, so be aware of that.

We will meet over near the bathrooms and trailhead. There won't be many people up there so will be easy to find the group.
