Itinerary:

Let's try again. We will start at Andrew's Cove and hike up a side trail for one hour to reach the AT at Indian Grave Gap. We continue on the AT to the summit of Tray Mountain and beyond off-trail to the secret lookout, where we will have lunch. Returning to the AT, we descend the north side of Tray, past the shelter, to the first gap, where we will turn around and retrace our steps. With an elevation gain of over 3000 ft, his hike provides a good workout, but we will hike at a moderate pace, making stops as needed. We will have supper at a barbecue joint that has draft beer south of Cleveland. If you do not wish to stop for supper, please carpool with others of similar intent or drive on your own to the Cleveland Ingles, where you can join the carpool.

I am looking for a volunteer to coordinate the carpool at the Indian Trail park-and-ride. I and anyone else "meeting at event" will be joining the group at 9:00 at the Cleveland Ingles, behind the gas pumps, also a good place for a pit stop (Starbucks inside Ingles).

As we know, winter is unpredictabie and the conditions in the mountains are much different from those in the city. Please bring more warm clothes than you expect to wear, because you might need them! And be aware that the trail could be icy in spots, so wear appropriate hiking boots.

The photo shows the camping area known as the Cheesefactory.

From Indian Trail prak-and-ride, drive 85N, then 985N, then just before Gainesville take 129/11N. Stay on that road to Cleveland and drive right through the town to the intersection with 75 (going to Helen). The Ingles is at the NE corner of the intersection. Driving time is one hour (60 miles)

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):150Mile(s)
Carpool Departure Time: 8:00 am

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $60.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

I'll be contacting anyone who has not done a D5-level hike recently to determine if this is a suitable hike for you.
