Intermediate (approximately 10 miles of mountain biking)

Oh how splendid Fall can be! The leaves begin to change color, the air is a bit cooler and a Sunday morning drive can’t be beat! We will drive across HWY 52 and make approximately four stops (at different orchards) for apples, pies, cider, fritters and anything else made with apples. Other fresh fruits and vegetables are available.

Now that we’ve loaded up on apples, time to burn some calories. HWY 52 connects with GA 400 in Dahlonega and Helen is not too far away. Our next stop is Unicoi State Park. At this point the group will split in two, with one group hiking the Unicoi to Helen Trail, passing along Smith Creek Trail. Many beautiful sights will be found along the Smith Creek Trail, including hardwood forest, springs and brooks and a boulderfield.

Depending on where the group parks and begins the hike, distance: approximately 5 miles (2.5 mileseach way).and the other group riding the Helen trail. Much of the trail has been used as part of the NORBA Nationals Race course. It is a lot of fun with its twists, turns and stream crossings. time: 1.5 hours, distance 6.4 miles. Both of these trails lead to downtown Helen, where our hikers/riders have the opportunity to join in the Oktoberfest celebration for some suds and grub before heading back on their respective trail. We’ll play it by the seat of our pants and take a group vote on whether we should stop for a few suds.
