Itinerary:

Welcome to the next in my series of Saturday Saunters! They'll go no faster than a moderate pace (a saunter if you will) and we will pause to take pictures when the opportunity arises.  This is an awesome hike if you are just getting into hiking or are new to the AOC.  I will be keeping our hikers together so will ask that no one goes ahead of the group.

Cochran Mill Trails and Nature Center

After meeting promptly at 9:30 AM in the parking lot at the Cochran Mill Nature Center, we’ll visit the Nature Center to enjoy the wonderful live animal exhibits they have there (it is only $3.00 per person and covers the exibits and parking).  You will not be dissappointed by the variety of animals or knowledgeable staff in this small Nature Center. We'll then trek the trails of Cochran Mill. These trails (much of which travel along Big Bear and Little Bear creek) include some nice waterfalls, a few interesting man-made dams, lovely woods and a bonus marsh area. There is a storied past to the mill and I'll share that as we travel.  By the way, did you know a rather famous scene from The Walking Dead was filmed at one of the falls?  I will point out the shot location and describe the setting.  Once we complete the hike our next stop (and this is optional) is at the Blue Eyed Daisy.

I am allowing dogs on this hike, but they will need to be on a leash at all times as there are occasional folks on horseback in the area.  If your dog is not well- behaved around horses, please leave it at home.  They are not allowed in the Nature Center.  This would not be a hike on which to break in a new trail dog.

Optional Lunch afterwards at the Blue Eyed Daisy in Nearby Serenbe

For those that are interested, after the conclusion of the event, some of us will be headed over to the Blue Eyed Daisy in nearby Serenbe.  The Daisy (as the locals refer to it) serves wonderful sandwiches, salads and some of the best baked goods in GA! Although dogs are not allowed inside the restaurant, they are very dog friendly there and have tables outside, and a fresh water bowl handy.

Required Items to Bring:

Appropriate walking/hiking shoes.

Plenty of fluid for adequate hydration

The Cochran Mill Nature Center only costs $3.00 per person to park and includes all the live animal exhibits (and trails) and is well worth the small amount.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

Extra money if you plan on joining me at the Blue Eyed Daisy after the event.

There will not be a carpool for this event as I live on the west side of Georgia.  Trust me though, the trails and Nature Center are well worth the drive.
