Itinerary:

Blood Mountain is the highest point on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, and it is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the state. We will hike a 9.7 mile loop to the top and back starting from the Slaughter Creek Trailhead at Lake Winfield Scott at approx. 9:00 am (Parking fee is $5/car or an Interagency Senior/Access Pass).

We will hike on Slaughter Creek Trail for 2.7 mi. to the AT then on to Blood Mountain another 0.8 mi.  There we will have lunch and take in the views. Then 0.9 mi. further east on the AT we pick up Freeman Trail to the right. This is a 1.8 mile stretch of trail on rocky terrain. We then meet up again with the AT for another 2.2 mi. and finally 1.5 mi. on Jarrard Gap Trail back to Lake Winfield Scott. This hike is full of beautiful, varied spectacles with rivers, mountain balds with long views, rocky trail and moderate stretches. It has it all. Even a beautiful lake at the beginning and end.
