Itinerary:

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing where the climber climbs up a short distance without a rope and harness but with large foam pads to land on if the climber falls. Most beginners find bouldering more difficult than rope climbing but that may be psychological as the easiest bouldering routes/problems are about as difficult as the easiest rope routes. Traditionally bouldering is considered short duration, high energy whereas rope climbing requires steady endurance.

Join me for an evening of bouldering at Stone Summit Atlanta (SSA) indoor climbing gym. You can leave as early as you want or you can climb until 10pm when the gym closes. I plan to stay until at least 9:30pm. Climbers of all levels, even absolute beginners are welcome. Rope and harness climbing is certainly available and optional but we will try to keep the focus of this event on bouldering.

  • If it is your first time climbing you will need to sign a waiver and go through a safety orientation with Stone Summit employees. I can also go through all the basics/safety step by step. There are climbing routes for all skill levels.
  • If time permits, I can help you become belay certified at Stone Summit.
  • If you are an experienced climber you can head off on your own after you check in with me or stay with the group and show off your skills.
  • You do not need to have any climbing gear since you can rent it from SSA. You are welcome to bring your own gear. 
  • The cost for a one day pass for our event is $11 per person and is paid to the gym (not paid to the AOC). It includes all the gear you need. This is a discount price so to get $11 day pass you need to be signed up for the event. At the register please tell them your name and you are with the Atlanta Outdoor Club to get the discount price.
  • After you sign the waiver, pay the entry fee and collect your gear, head to the safety orientation benches straight ahaed. I will be there in a red shirt -- unless you are running late then we will be in the bouldering room.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Most people wear traditional gym clothing. Some opt for long pants to avoid scuffed up knees.
  • Plan to eat a little something before you arrive. Water fountain is available at the gym.
  • Cubbies are available to store extra clothing and shoes. Bring a small lock if you have valuables (pay per use locks are available).
  • Stone Summit can provide climbing shoes, a chalk bag and a harness/ATC (if you use the ropes). This is included in the $11 price. Please bring ID as a form of collateral while renting gear.
