This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The purpose of this event will be to offer Atlanta Outdoor Club members a shared group expedition to experience the "Great American Solar Eclipse."

If the weather cooperates our preferred viewing destination will be Toccoa, GA. Toccoa is in the path of totality.

Park anywhere you can and meet the AOC group in the first citizens bank parking lot near the theater.

Note: We will check the forecast on Sunday and confirm the Toccoa location by email.  If necesary, we could drive to another location.

Toccoa Georgia Eclipse Times:

1:07 pm - Partial Eclipse begins

2:36 pm - Total Eclipse for exactly 2 minutes

4:02 pm - Partial Eclipse ends

From the city of Toccoa:

The Totally Toccoa street party will take place in Downtown Toccoa from 12 pm - 3 pm in the First Citizens parking lot across from the Ritz Theatre.

We will have food and music.

We will also be live-streaming the NASA presentation inside the Historic Ritz Theatre.

APPARATUS for SAFELY VIEWING the ECLIPSE:

It's absolutely safe to view the eclipse with the naked eye during its few minutes of totality, but it's necessary to use special safety gear for staring at the sun during the partial phases; i.e, the same eye-safety guidelines as for viewing the sun on any normal day.

If you already have your own "Eclipse Glasses" (or filtered Binoculars, etc.) bring them - otherwise we can share.  You do not need to bring eclipse glasses.

We can pass around and share eclipse glasses during the long 1.5 hour partial phase. I will bring a pair of glasses.

You can look at the sun without glasses during the 2 minute totality (Total blockage).

IF the moon does not get stuck in front of the sun, there will be another 1.5 hour partial eclipse after the totality.

Thanks to Charlie Cottingham for portions of this posting, please see his AOC eclipse trip for more info on the eclipse.
