Itinerary:

Saturday is shaping up to be a perfect SUNNY day for a hike & swim. Temperature is expected to be in the low 70's. Join us for a pre-hurricane hike!

In 1811, surveyor Andrew Ellicott determined the starting point for the North Carolina-Georgia state line and chiseled an inconspicuous mark on a rock on the east bank of the Chattooga River. Here the mountainous regions of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia converge, and this is where the Ellicott Rock Wilderness straddles the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. This is the only Wilderness area lying in three states. Rugged terrain, tall peaks, and the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River are the hallmarks of this Wilderness.

The hike to Ellicott Rock along the Chattooga River Trail (CRT) is an out and back. We will start at the Burrell's Ford parking lot and head south for a bit to check out the 70 foot tall King's Creek Falls.  From there will we head back north along the CRT until we reach a short side trail to Spoonauger Falls.  After a short stop to view the falls, we will continue north for about 4 more miles to Ellicott Rock. The trail, which follows the "Wild & Scenic Chattooga River", can be a bit rugged with downed trees, slippery rocks and muddy spots.  Once we arrive at the section of the trail above Ellicott Rock, we will climb down the river bank to look for the carvings that indicate Ellicott Rock and Commissioners Rock. We will spend some time here to swim, cool off, and have lunch. Then we will head back down the river to the Burrell's Ford parking lot.

Please note the Ellicott Rock Wilderness is considered a temperate rainforest and has the highest average rainfall east of the Mississippi.  We are likely to have a late summer thunderstorm. Plan to get wet!

On the drive back to Atlanta, we will make an optional brief stop to see the Stumphouse Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls.  Additionally, your trip leader plans to stop for dinner on the way back.
