There will be a MANDATORY packing meeting on Thursday, February 5, to ensure that everyone has the proper gear and to split the community gear amongst the group.

Don’t stay inside just because its winter. February offers many advantages for the backpacker: no bugs, no crowds, and clear views! Join us for a backpacking trip to explore the Jocassee Gorges area. This region, which is along the North and South Carolina border, contains some of the finest waterfalls in the region. In particular, we will travel along the Whitewater and Thompson Rivers. Along the way we will see Upper and Lower Whitewater Falls, Big Falls, and Bear camp falls. The highlight of the trip will be Big Falls, which requires a short bushwhack along the Thompson River.

We will start our hike at the Bad Creek trailhead after shuttling a second car at the Whitewater River trailhead, and take the Foothills Trail to the east. A side-trail will take us to an overlook of the Lower Whitewater falls, before we continue along the trail to the Thompson River. We will then drop our packs to check out the Thompson River falls. Finally, we will continue to Bearcamp creek, where we will set camp. The next day, we will return along the Foothills trail, but continue along the trail up Whitewater creek to Upper Whitewater falls and our other car.
