Itinerary:
We will start at the Byron Herbert Reese Trail, near Neels Gap...hike to the AT and go up over Blood Mtn and down to the Jarrad Gap trail. This will take us down to Lake Winfield Scott for a lunch break, and to hike the little .6 mile trail around the lake. Then it is back to the AT via the Slaugher Creek Trail and over Blood Mtn, and back to our cars.

Mileage Breakdown-
-Byron Herbert Reese Access Trail to Flatrock Gap .7 mi
-Flatrock Gap to Jarrad Gap (on AT) 4.0 mi
-Jarrad Gap trail 1.2 mi
-Lake Winfield Scott trail .6 mi
-Slaughter Creek trail 2.7 mi
-Slaughter Creek to Flatrock Gap (on AT): 2.3 mi
-Byron Herbert Reese Access Trail to cars .7 mi

Total distance: ~12.2 miles
Total ascent: ~3000+ feet

Note the carpool time is designed to hopefully miss most of the rush hour traffic.

The pace on this hike will be very moderate...it will be a D5 just due to the distance and total ascent, but we aren't going to be speed hiking it. I'd say it will take us about 6-7 hrs including breaks.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • If rain is forecast, the hike will be rescheduled for a future date.
  • Because this a D5 hike, this event is for advanced hikers only. If you have not recently completed some AOC D5 hikes, I will be contacting you to determine your level of experience and if this is the right hike for you.
