Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

A Cinco de Mayo Classic in the making!
Following the North Bound (NoBo) Appalachian Trail section from Unicoi Gap to the Deep Gap Shelter - 14 rigorous miles out and 14 rigorous miles back the second day will give even the most seasoned BP'ers a run for their money. This point to point (P2P) event eliminates the need for a key swap and you get to taste the same trail in NoBo AND SoBo fashion. I have this as an exploratory event just in case we get to a full shelter (thru-hiker season) we can opt for some other tent sites along the area, so don't get your feelings hurt if we have to pack on more than stated mileage. If you're not familiar with this section of the AT (a fave to many AOC'ers) it's got a lot of elevation and the shelter area will only provide mild protection from the weather and elements...so be prepared and keep an eye on weather systems for this event. side note: doing the anti-rain dance now ;)

Arrive to the Mansell Road carpool lot at least 15 minutes early to settle carpool assignments, load up and do intros and a final check before heading out.

Note: Bears have been known to be active in this area. Bring a hang bag (or bear canister), paracord & carabiner(s) to get food (and smelly stuff like toothpaste and gum) up and out of the shelter/sleeping area.

As always if you do not have sigificant and recent D5 or higher AOC BACKPACKING events in your history you will be getting a call from a trip leader to see if this is a good fit. We reserve the right to remove members that do not fit that billet since it's a difficult hike, let alone adding a full pack on top of things. safety first!
