Itinerary:

Having Ward-Withdrawal?  Members have keenly felt Holt's absence while he is away, hiking  the AT for a couple of weeks.  Allan W. pleaded with me (well . . .  he asked me) to post a Friday morning hike (as Holt usually does) on the west side of Marietta (closer to Allan's house), so this is the one we chose to do.  We will NOT be hiking up any mountains on this event, but rather enjoying an area of undulating hills and easy-on-the-feet trails.

Allan has been assigned the task of researching the history of the area so that we can continue the Ward tradition of interesting historical tidbits throughout the hike. Additional input from other history mavins will be greatly appreciated!

We will start our hike promptly at 10 am in the parking lot off of Dallas Highway (Whitlock Ave.if you're coming from Marietta) and hike the 5.5. mile loop trail, winding our way through a variety of landscapes that go all the way to Powder Springs Road (Kolb Farm) before beginning the second half of the loop back.

This area offers hiking that is quite different from the mountain sections of Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield.  We'll keep a moderate pace, stopping from time to time for water breaks and photos, but our goal will be to finish in about 2 hours.  The terrain is varied, but nothing seriously steep.

I'll update you before the event on the weather.  Be sure to bring sufficient water, no matter what the temperature.

GPS Coordinates for your turn to get to the trailhead:

From Marietta:

Take Whitlock Ave. west past Burnt Hickory.  Stay on this road all the way.  The name of the road (120) changes to Dallas Hwy.   Pass New Haven Drive & Carriage Oaks.  You'll soon see a sign that you're entering the Kennesaw Memorial Park (on right).  Pass Dallas Circle (on left) and be ready to turn Left at Cheatham Hill Drive.  The parking lot is about 1/4 mile down this road.

From Barret Parkway:

Turn east onto Dallas Highway (120).  You will cross Noses Creek, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church (on left), and John Ward Road (on right).  You will cross Hardage Road (left) which is also Old John Ward Road (right).  Be ready to turn right onto Cheatham Hill Drive.  The parking lot is about 1/4 mile down this road.
