Trail Details:

"Roan Mountain is vast, wide, and stunningly beautiful. More than a single mountain, Roan’s high-elevation beauty spans a series of five summits from east to west, an eclectic and widely diverse sampling of spruce-fir forest and open, wildflower-covered mountain balds. The Roan chain is bisected in the near-middle by a paved highway at Carvers Gap and traced by the epic Appalachian Trail along most of its towering ridge. It’s a fantastic venue for day hikes and backpacking adventures alike." (https://ashevilletrails.com/roan-mountain/)

 About the trip:

This will be a three-day, 51 mile,  backpack along the Appalachian Trail. The daily hikes will be long, but taken at a moderate pace. I like to start hiking early each day, allowing time to stop and enjoy a few sites along the trail (time permitting).

Friday:  The carpool will depart Indian Trail at 6pm. The drive to Erwin Tennessee will take approximately 4 hours. We will camp for the night at Nolichucky Campground in Erwin.

Saturday: (16 miles) We will have breakfast and then shuttle a car to our finish point at 19E. Once the shuttle is completed, we will begin our hike, which starts just in front of the hostel. We will enjoy a mid-day stop at Beauty Spot to enjoy the views. We will finish the day at Cherry Gap shelter.

Sunday: (23 miles) We will start ealy in order to cover the days distance and to enjoy all of the views in store. The second half of this day will be along high ridgeline offering many spectacular views, including Little Rock Knob, Beartown Mountain, Roan Mountain, and Jane Mountain.  We will camp for the night on top of Grassy Ridge Bald.

Monday: (12 miles)  We will try finish early in order to arrive back in Atlanta at a reasonable hour.

This is an advanced backpack and requires prior experience backpacking with long distances! . If you do not have a history of D6 backpacks with the club, you will be contacted to confirm you experience.

Camping at Nolichucky campground will be $11.50 each. Please bring this money in addition to your carpool money.
