Itinerary:

What better place to take a ghoulish early-Halloween sunset/night hike than to the top of BLOOD Mtn!?! The mountain whose name is believed to come from a battle between the Creek and Cherokee Indians at Slaughter gap where the streams ran red with blood. Yeah, I know it will be a few weeks prior to Halloween, but the weather looked perfect for this Saturday and I'm sure the goblins have already set up shop on BM.

We'll hike up the Byron Reece trail and at Flatrock Gap connect with the Appalachian Trail, which we will take to the top of Blood Mountain. The hike will be timed to allow us to reach the summit in time to eat our dinner and watch a spectacular mountain sunset.

The hike to the top of the mountain is about 2.5 miles (5 r/t) and has 1,500 feet of ascent, which puts the hike at the very upper end of the D3 range. If you have not completed previous hikes in the N Ga mountains, please do not sign up for this event. Hiking in the mountains is more strenuous than local hikes, and coming down long, steep mountain terrain in the dark is not the best time to experiment.
