Itinerary:

It's the beginning of the thru-hiker season, and we will be hiking along one of the most popular portions of the Appalachian Trail from Woody Gap to Blood Mountain.  This intermediate backpacking trip will consist of two segments.  On the first segment, we will backpack about 7 miles on the AT from Woody Gap to the intersection with the Freeman trail.  The reason we are stopping here is that the Forest Service does not permit fires along the AT within about a mile of Blood Mountain.  This is also the intersection to the Woods Hole Shelter, which has a water source (i.e., a creek) about .2 miles from the AT.  Bring a lunch to enjoy along the first segment.  We should arrive at our campsite around 2:00 pm.  That will give us a couple of hours to set up our tents and fetch fire wood.

Around 4:00 pm, we will continue north on the AT for our second segment to Blood Mountain.  The second segment is almost 3 miles round trip.  Enjoy the views and take your time exploring the summit.  We will return to the campsite in time for dinner and before it gets too dark outside.  After dinner, enjoy the comraderie of the group and maybe hear some stories from transient visitors who intend to complete a much longer journey.

We will try to leave the campsite no later than 10:00 am on Sunday morning.  Bring a second lunch or heavy snacks so you won't get hungry.  We should reach the Woody Gap trailhead around 2:00 pm.

The first segment of our backpacking trip has a total gain of elevation of about 500 feet.  But don't let that fool you.  There are some descent climbs and descents, with a total of 1600 feet in elevation gain on the ascents, and about 1100 feet of elevation loss on the descents.

The second segment is almost entirely uphill to Blood Mountain and we will gain about 850 feet.
