Itinerary:

Join me for a pleasant day of hiking on the Coosa Backcountry Trail starting at Vogel State Park.  Lots of hills and views with the leaves down for the winter.  The hike begins with a short uphill climb to Georgia 180.  After crossing GA 180, we will walk downhill for 3 miles.  The next several miles will be the most challenging of the hike with a 3 mile climb to the summit of Coosa Bald (elev 4280), descent to Wolf Pen Gap, and another climb to the summit of Slaughter Mountain (elev 4338).  After Slaughter mountain, we will continue to the fork in the trail and take a right on Duncan Ridge Trail to meet the AT.  We will make a left on the AT to reach the summit of Blood Mountain (elev 4458).  We will take time to explore the views at the summit and back track down the AT and Duncan Ridge Trail to meet the Coosa Backcountry Trail.  We will take the remaining downhill section of the Coosa Backcountry trail back to the parking lot where we started.

This is a strenuous trail and only those in excellent physical condition should participate. This hike is recommended for hikers with previous long distance hikes of 12 or more miles in the mountains.  Total elevation gain on this hike will be 4000+ feet and distance will be between 16 and 17 miles.

We will take some brief water breaks along the way and a lunch/snack break on Coosa Bald and Blood Mountain.
