This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Warning:  This hike is definitely exploratory in nature as I have not hiked all of the parts of the intended trek.  Much of the hike will be on lightly used trails or abandoned woods roads and parts will include bushwhacking.  I estimate as much as half of the hike will include areas I have not hiked before so they will be new to me.  Only sign up for this hike if you are adventurous and willing to wander in the woods a bit.  I would strongly advise against this hike for beginners.

Let’s hike around Coopers Furnace and then explore Hurricane Hollow, where iron ore and Manganese was mined back in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  .  We will park at the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) visitors center at Lake Allatoona and begin our hike there.

We will visit the overlook above the Allatoona Dam before heading down to Coopers Furnace.  From there we will head over to Hurricane Hollow where the true exploration begins.  Although I have explored parts of the Hollow, this hike will definitely be exploratory as we look for further evidence of the long ago abandoned mining operations.  We will climb part way of the shoulder of Pine Mountain on a long abandoned woods road before heading off trail to try to find a way down the mountain.

Our hike will transit about 6 miles with some elevation gain as we hike part way of the shoulder of Pine Mountain.   I would definitely not recommend this hike for beginners due to the overall elevation gain and length of the hike.

There are bathrooms in the ACE visitor center along with a very interesting museum giving a history of the building of the Allatoona dam and lake and of the former town of Etowah which now sits under about 100 feet of water behind the dam.

Notice:  If a system glitch with the AOC website allows more people to be registered onto this event beyond the maximum number set on the event description, those excess registrations may be moved to the wait list.  Be assured, people will be cleared off the wait list in order of initial registrations.
