Notice: This web page is designed so that you can only put yourself on the waiting list. Once I verify that you satisfy the registration requirements I will move you to the list of participants. See registration requirements below.

Day 1. (Saturday, December 14): Departure from Atlanta.

Day 2. (Sunday, December 15): Arrive at Ministro Pistarini (Ezeiza) International Airport in Buenos Aires. (Airport code: EZE.) Take shuttle bus to Aeroparque (AEP),  where our domestic flight to San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC) departs. Note: there are a few flights directly from EZE to BRC. Arrive in Bariloche around noon.  Meet with our local organizer and pay the balance of the event cost. After lunch we do a bus tour of the area (Circuito Chico).

Day 3. (Monday, December 16): In the morning drive to Pampa Linda, where we will spend the night at Hosteria Pampa Linda.  After checking in we drive to nearby Ventisquero Negro, where we will have lunch while watchng the ice fall over half a mile to the bottom of the valley. After lunch we return to the lodge and go on a short hike to a nearby waterfall.

Day 4. (Tuesday, December 17): We ascend the slopes of Cerro Tronador to Refugio Otto Meiling, where we will spend the night. This refugio is famous for its excellent wine cellar. Hiking time: about 6 hours. Elevation change: a little over 1000 meters.

Day 5. (Wednesday, December 18): We cross over to Refugio Agostino Rocca which is in Paso de las Nubes. This involves crossing a glacier (Glaciar Alerce). Ropes, crampons and other equipment will be provided and we will be assisted by mountaineering guides licensed by the National Park. Their number will be proportional to the number of participants and is regulated by the park. There will be no significant elevation change and no particular skill or training is required. Hiking time about 5 hours, of which about 2 hours will be spent on the glacier.

Day 6. (Thursday, December 19): We return to Pampa Linda by a different route and return to Bariloche, where we will spend the night. Hiking time: about 5 hours, mostly downhill.

Day 7. (Friday, December 20): Today we take a boat and sail a couple of hours on Nahuel Huapi Lake to Puerto Blest (there is no road between Bariloche and Puerto Blest), drop our luggage at the hotel, have lunch, take a short bus ride to Laguna Frias, and after a short boat ride we arrive at Puerto Frias, where we begin today's hike. After walking about a mile on the road to Chile we get to Paso de los Raulies trail. Length: 6 miles, elevation gain: 2000 ft. This trail meanders accross the international boundary and enters Chilean territory a couple of times. There are national parks on both sides of the border and the area is in pristine condition. The trail ends near the hotel in Puerto Blest, where we will spend the night. Hiking time: 5 hours.

Day 8.  (Saturday, December 21): In the morning hike to Cascada de los Cantaros and back. Hiking time: 3 hours. Return to Bariloche by boat in the afternoon. Spend the night in Bariloche. (Note: arrival time in Bariloche depends on weather conditions, so it is not advisable to book a flight on this date). 

Day 9. (Sunday, December 22): Return to Buenos Aires in the morning. Fly to Atlanta in the evening.

Day 10. (Monday, December 23): Arrive in Atlanta.

NOTES:
This itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.
A refugio is a fully staffed cabin with bunk beds and hard mattresses. If you prefer to prepare your own food, you can bring your supplies from Bariloche and use the shelter's wood burning stove for a small fee. Crampons and other technical equipment will be provided as needed.

The Trip Leader(s) for this event has (have) elected either to personally collect the funds that event participants are required to pay, or to require participants to pay funds directly to a third party. No funds will be paid to the Atlanta Outdoor Club for this event. Therefore, by registering for this event, you acknowledge and agree to the following: (1) the monies paid by registrants will not be monitored, managed, or otherwise accounted for by the Atlanta Outdoor Club; (2) that the Atlanta Outdoor Club bears no financial responsibility for this event; and (3) you waive any and all claims against the Atlanta Outdoor Club, and hold the Atlanta Outdoor Club harmless for the loss of any monies you paid for this event.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, any paying registrant may request directly from the Trip Leader, prior to the event, a breakdown of funds collected, estimated expenses, and deposits made in anticipation of the event. Following the event, the Trip Leader must complete his or her financial accounting for the event, with supporting documentation, within 30 days of the completion of the event, and a paid registrant may request a breakdown of funds collected, money spent and supporting documentation after that time. If you are unable to obtain requested documentation, please contact the Director of Paid Events.

 


Required Items to Bring:

Clothing: Long johns - 2 pairs of trousers - 2 pairs of woolen socks and 2 pairs of sock liners - 3 sets of underwear - Hiking boots (waterproof) - sandals or booties for indoors - 3 t-shirts - 2 sweaters - Waterproof parka - Waterproof pant covers - gaiters - 1 pair of woolen gloves or mittens - 1 pair of waterproof gloves or 1 pair of waterproof glove covers - balaclava - Sun hat - Sleeping bag (rated 32 degrees F) - Sunglasses - Woolen hat

Toiletries: Toilet paper and paper tissues - Toothpaste and toothbrush - Deodorant - glycerine soap or detergent - Lip balm

Equipment: Backpack (minimum size: 35 liters). - Backpack cover or two large trash bags - Water bottle - Head lamp and spare batteries - Sunglasses (important!) - Trekking poles.

Miscellaneous: Plastic bags for clothing and garbage - Personal First-aid kit - Sunblock (at least SPF 30)

Notes:

Registration Requirements.
To participate in this event you must be either an AOC trip leader, or be recommended by an AOC trip leader and have recent D5 experience. If you wish to participate in this event you must place yourself on the waiting list. Once I verify you satisfy the requirements I will move you to the list of participants.

Payment and Refund Schedule:

1. A deposit of $525.00 must be received by the organizer through PayPal to zalikri@gmail.com by October 1. This includes a $25 AOC user fee which is nonrefundable. The balance of the deposit will be nonrefundable after November 8. However, if a qualified substitute can be found to take your place in the trip, she/he can use your deposit. 

2. You will pay for your trip (less the deposit) in Bariloche. Payment must be in cash in US dollars.

Before booking your lodging in Bariloche please contact the organizer. This is important to ensure that all participants lodge close to each other.

If you wish to stay in the area after finishing the event, there are several alternatives available including climbing Cerro Tronador, but arrangements must be made in advance. Consult the event organizer for details.

Cost Includes:

-All transportation to and from Bariloche to the trailheads and the boat dock, and transportation to and from Bariloche to the airport.

-A nonrefundable $25.00 AOC user fee.

-Lodging in the refugios.

-Lodging at Hosteria Pampa Linda in a double room.

-Lodging at Hosteria Puerto Blest in a double room.

-All meals and snacks while on the trails and in the refugios.

-Licensed guide, assistant guides and insurance (these are requirements of the park authorities).

-Technical and cooking equipment as needed.

COST DOES NOT INCLUDE:

-Airfare (Atlanta to Bariloche and return, changing planes in Buenos Aires).

-Shuttle bus between airports in Buenos Aires (around $15.00 each way).

-Meals and lodging in Bariloche, at Hotel Puerto Blest, and in transit to and from Bariloche.  

-Beverages.

Estimate the total cost of this trip, including airfare, lodging in hotels, event cost, etc, at around $4,500.


US passport holders do not need a visa to enter Argentina.
