Itinerary:

<<< Objective >>>

Have you ever wanted to challenge yourself, really challenge yourself to

  1. Take a long trekking with climbing over 4,000 feet, but prefer skip the travel to remote mountains to save time;
  2. Take a long hike in the remote mountains, but not sure you’re ready for its distance, climbing, and the pace;
  3. Add a new form of endurance training to your fitness program;
  4. Burn out massive amount of calories.

This 16-Miler at Kennesaw Mt. may be the answer.

<<< Distance, Ascent, Pace >>>

Distance is 16.5 miles; and the elevation gain is approx. 4,800 feet. If one maintains a moderate pace of 2.5 mph, it’ll take 6.5 hours to finish.

The faster we finish, the deeper we breathe, the more calories we burn!

<<< Itinerary >>>

We meet a few minutes before our starting time at the Visitor Center. We’ll go 3 rounds and over the Kennesaw Mountain 6 times for a total of 16.5 miles.

  1. We’ll start from the Visitor Center and go over Kennesaw Mt., little Kennesaw Mt., and Pigeon Hill to Burnt Hickory Road for 3.125 miles. We’ll turn around and retrace the same route to go over the mountains the 2nd time, and get back to the Visitor Center to complete the first round of 6.25 miles.

  2. We’ll complete the second round 2 the same way for a total of 12.5 miles.

  3. In the third round, we'll follow the same route going over the mountains the 5th time, but only go to the “2-mile” post just pass the little Kennesaw Mt. along the wooden fence on the right hand side. We’ll then turn around going over the mountains the 6th time, and get back to the Visitor Center to complete the entire course of 16.5 miles.

This is a go at your own pace event. We all can go at the pace we like to train and enjoy for the moment. In the end we always get the excellent workout and something more.

<<< 16.5 miles/6.5 hours: 2.5 mph Moderate Pace >>>

We also use 2.5 mph as a targeted moderate pace in the remote mountains environment, e.g. Appalachian Trails. This 16-Miler at Kennesaw Mt. is an excellent reference for its similar distance, climbing, and the pace.

Kennesaw Mt. is in town and nobody can get lost there. If anything happens, there are plenty of help available quickly to our members.

Kennesaw Mt. has many early exits; if necessary any participant can take the early exit without finishing the entire course. So the normal vetting process will not be applied to any registrant, other than you must have D5 experience to qualify.

Just understand if you don’t finish the entire course in reasonable amount of time, you will not earn the credit; your name will be removed from the participant list. Even so, you’ll have nothing to lose, but great experience and pride of taking a fun challenge to make yourself stronger!

Please check in with trip leader when you’re done.

<<< Entrance Fee >>>

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park has implemented a new cashless entrance fee program, applicable at all parking lots within park boundaries, beginning Nov. 13, 2019. Entrance fees are: $5 daily, $40 annual. Interagency Passes will be available for purchase, and are valid as an entrance pass.

Passes may be purchased online through recreation.gov (beginning Nov. 8, 2019) and at the Visitor Center (beginning Nov. 13, 2019). This is an entrance fee, not a parking fee. Parking is not guaranteed. Entrance fee is per car, not per person. Federal National Park pass is also acceptable.

During closure of Visitor Center, you have to buy a pass online at the link below before the hike. You won't be able to buy one at the parking lot.

https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/2788

An annual pass is a great way to motivate oneself to keep coming back and enjoy all of the National Recreation Area parks and national parks throughout the USA. It is more convenient and very cost effective.
