Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Let's check out Boundary Waters Park along the Chattahoochee, about 30 minutes ESE of Atlanta, or 40 minutes from Sandy Springs. AOC hasn't visited it since 2016, and it's a nice addition to trails south of I-20, approximately 8 miles south of Sweetwater State Park.

We will attempt to hike most of the trails in this Douglas County Park, adding up to 7-7.5 miles, with about 800' of climbing and descending. Trail surface should be relatively smooth and well packed. This is a new park for me, and the trail maps look quite clear, so we should make good time.

Given the distance and pace we hope to cover, this is NOT for brand new hikers. This is a relatively easy D3, and it is appropriate for intermediate hikers, ambitious D2 hikers, and aerobically fit newbies.  We will move along at a brisk/steady clip (~3 mph) for 2 1/2 hours with occasional breaks to look at the river, swamp and some sentinel trees, (see below).

Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to limber up, adjust your pack, and meet everyone before we start.

We will hike in light to moderate rain; heavy rain or thunder cancels. Please remove yourself from the roster or waiting list if you decide you won't make it.

Parking is FREE.  Bathrooms are available at the Aquatics Center.

Notes:

Reference:  Hiking Atlanta's Hidden Forests--Intown and Out, Jonah McDonald  This book is fun because it has many hidden gems right under our noses, and it locates "Sentinel Trees" along almost every route.  In this case, we will look for:

Large Sycamore at top of Red Loop, near River (7.5' circumference)

Large Southern Red Oak (dead and spooky?) at top of Yellow Loop (19' circumference)

Water Oak with a Cherry tree growing out of its trunk on Red Loop, on a low ridge above the double-back section.
