Itinerary:

Cades Cove Loop (Hike or Bike)

Part 2 of 3 of the Smoky Mountains Spring Trio

This is the second of three consecutive Smoky Mountains day hikes.  The trip leaders will be staying in downtown Gatlinburg, TN for the duration of the three hikes.  You are welcome to stay where you like and join us for one, two or all three hikes.

This event starts very early, 7 am sharp, because the trip leaders wanted to take advantage of special road closure hours. Plan to arrive at 6:45 so we can start on time. Note, average drive time from Gatlinburg is 50 minutes.  From sunrise till 10 am the Cades Cove loop is closed to car traffic. Hikers and bicyclists (and wildlife) will have the valley all to themselves. Feel free to bike or hike this 11-mile one-way loop on this AOC event.  We will start together, at the same time, and aim to be off the road and together at the visitor center by 11 am.

We will meet at the Cades Cove parking lot next to the Cades Cove Campground Store Bike Bldg, 10035 Campground Dr, Townsend, TN 37882.

Many people consider Cades Cove the crown jewel of the Smokies. Cades Cove is a broad valley with an 11-mile, one-way paved, road around it. The loop has the most concentrated group of historic buildings, churches and log houses in the Smokies.  This is also one of the best places to spot black bears, especially in the spring.  Most of the valley is fenced to keep visitors separated from wildlife in the grass area. Wildlife is especially visible at dawn and dusk. Stay alert and keep your camera ready.

At the end of our hike or bike, we plan to celebrate our time together with an ice cream cone available for purchase at the visitors center.

(Note, because 95% of our walking will be on paved road, trail runners or hiking shoes can be worn.)
