Itinerary:
moderate –heavy duty bushwhacking 7 mile hiking adventure

This is not a very tough hike by fearless leader Bruce’s standards with only the tall weeds, slapping in the face, to cause anyone to curse my name. That part of the hike is some 100 yards or so around Reed Creek, and along much of the Chattooga River, the last mile.

After we travel up to Clayton and stop briefly at McDonalds to coordinate (around 10:45am), we will then go up Hwy.441 north about ¼ of a mile to the right hand turn that goes to Warwoman Road and travel to our trailhead.

The hike follows an easy grade, on a wide roadbed for more than 1 mile, then turns into a smaller trail with some heavy bushwhacking through high reeds and weeds, including poison ivy (wear long pants, bring lotions for same). Then we get to a wide, but shallow crossing of Reed Creek at the Reed Creek bottoms. After some more bushwhacking (about 50 feet worth through more tall flora, the trail begins to follow right alongside the Chattooga River and more bushwhacking and ends at a sandy beach area across from lower Licklog Falls across the river on the South Carolina side. All of the previous bushwhacking is more than repaid with a very nice beach and swimming hole. Anyone who wants is welcome to swim and/or swim across the river to the waterfall. Indeed this will be the focal point of this relatively level hike; to swim, lounge on the beach, sunbathe and relax for a good bit of time before returning.

Anyone who wishes can join in an inexpensive dining experience at a local Chinese restaurant in Clayton, GA in Clayton afterwards.

This is a repeat of a hike done May 8th, which was incredibly fun and enjoyed by those who made it. Bring your sense of adventure - and waterbabies who like swimming and/or foot dipping will be most welcome, happy and well pleased on this trip. It cant be stressed enough to protect yourself from the poison ivy that’s more invasive on the last half of this trail, with long pants and lotions. I will provide aloe baby wipes to clean off legs, arms and exposed areas of skin after the hike, before we return to the big city.
