Itinerary:

The Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) is a footpath of nearly 300 miles through the Appalachian mountains of the southeastern United States. It is designed for foot travel in the tradition of the Appalachian Trail (AT).

Running from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Big Creek Campground on the northern edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park the BMT passes through some of the most remote backcountry in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, including eight federally designated Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas.

Join me as I explore sections 5a-5d on this iconic trail. We will park at Wilscot Gap. Todays hike will take us over 3 mountains (2 times each) and will include a fire tower on Brawley Mountain. Our turn around will be at the Toccoa River where the trail intersects Shallowford Bridge Road. We should enjoy several winter views including good views of Lake Blue Ridge.

This is a difficult D6 hike with about 4500 feet of ascent, additionally a pace of about 2.7 MPH will be averaged on this trek.
