Difficult – Very Difficult (Class III – IV)

Join us for an exciting and adventurous weekend of camping and white water rafting – it just doesn’t get much better! Fort Mountain derives its name from an ancient 855-foot-long rock wall which stands on the highest point of the mountain. The mysterious wall is thought to have been built by Indians as fortification against other more hostile Indians or for ancient ceremonies.

The park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Hikers and mountain bikers will find some of the most beautiful trails in northern Georgia. Most wind through hardwood forest and blueberry thickets, occasionally crossing streams and providing spectacular vistas. During the summer, visitors will enjoy the sand beach located on a clear mountain lake. In East Tennessee, rushing through the heart of the Cherokee National Forest, youll find the world-famous Ocoee River. Ocoee rafting offers fast-moving currents, big waves, and continuous Class III-IV action. The Upper Ocoee starts slowly and then roars into action as your guide navigates your raft through the 1996 Olympic whitewater course.

We’ll be camping in the pioneer area of the Fort Mountain State Park. This area has pit toilets, but no running water. Friday evening we will cook out under the stars and visit around the fire. Saturday, after breakfast, we’ll pack and make the one hour trip to the Nantahala Outdoor Center for our afternoon on the Upper Ocoee River. By late afternoon, we’ll be back at camp for some hiking, biking, lake swimming or relaxing. A good dinner and tall stories will fill the evening. Sunday will be open for everyone to further hike, explore or sleep in. We’ll depart for home early afternoon.

TRIP LEADER RAFTING NOTE: You do NOT need rafting experience for this trip but should be in good physical condition and accustomed to exercise. You do NOT need to know how to swim but you should be comfortable in and around water. Prior to getting on the river, our outfitter will give us plenty of direction and safety information as well as helmets and personal floatation devices. There will be a required rafting waiver for each individual to complete.
