Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Shining Rock is a mountain in western North Carolina. The mountain is one of the Great Balsam Mountains which are a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains within the Appalachian Mountains. Shining Rock summit is featured with massive boulders of white quartz shining under sunlight with enormous brilliance. We will start at Black Balsam Trailhead at 10:30. We will head up about 0.6 miles and a 400' climb to Black Balsam Knob with over 6,000 feet elevation and 360-degree views. We’ll either have our lunch there or at the Tennent Mountain summit.

After that, we'll descend a little, then head up Tennent Mountain for more beautiful views, then continue on the Art Loeb trail to Shining Rock Gap where we'll camp.

After setting up camp we prepare water then we will head towards Shining Rock for more great views.

The next morning we'll get up and after breakfast we can walk a short distance for morning views from Shining Rock or do an optional short hike toward Spanish Oak Gap about 1.5 Miles and back. Then we break camp around 10:30 and continue down the trail to the cars.

This is a relatively easy trip but you must be able to carry all your gear 10 miles both ways, staying at high altitude, going over 6K at Black Balsam and Tennent Mtn. We have had some people experience a bit of altitude sickness (slight headache) on this trip in the past.
