Itinerary:

Join me for the Georgia Triple Crown - Coosa Bald, Slaughter Mountain and Blood Mountain

We will start our hike from Vogel State Park (2300’) and hike 1 mile up to GA180 (2800’) and continue about 2 miles downhill along the Coosa Backcountry Loop. Then we'll hike about 4.5 miles up and summit Coosa Bald (4280'). We’ll have a short break, then hike down about 2 miles and up 1 miles to summit Slaughter Mountain (4338'). Rather than returning to Vogel State Park, we will continue on Duncan Ridge trail and Appalachian Trail to Blood Mountain (4458'). We will have our lunch and enjoy the view from the top for 30 minutes. After covering three summits, we will backtrack our steps to Coosa backcountry trail junction and finish the loop to the cars.

We will have approximately 4,600 feet of elevation gain. Overall, the hike will be around 17 miles with some strenuous climbing at a moderate and steady pace. We will stop at all of the major turns/crossroads to keep the group together and take necessary water breaks. We expect approximately 8 hours of hiking.

Bring enough food and water for a long day hike. It may be a hot day, so I would recommend 3 liters and electrolytes if you have them.

This is a strenuous hike, so please do not sign up unless you are in excellent physical condition. If you have not recently completed a D5 with the AOC, then I will contact you to confirm this event is appropriate for your current level.
