Itinerary:

Interested in exploring the west side of Slaughter Mountain?

Our hike starts at Woody Gap just 15 miles north of Dahlonega, GA. We will hike northeast on the Appalachian Trail to a scenic overlook called Preacher’s Rock. Here, at 3,600 feet, we will have a south-easterly view of the mountains, valleys, and Piedmont.

We will then continue on the Applalachian Trail to Lake Winfield Scott and onto the Slaughter Creek Trail.  The trail traverses the lower portion of Slaughter where we will leave the trail and bushwhack our way to the top of Slaughter Mtn. The steep slops will likely be an interesting challenge (leather gloves to protect your hands might be a good idea). Be prepared to improvise and explore a rarely traveled side of the mountain.

After reaching the top, we will descend on the backside to the Coosa Backcountry Loop Trail which takes us (via the Duncan Ridge Trail) to Blood Mtn.  We will break for lunch on some less crowded viewpoint somewhere near the top.

This is a partial loop for a total distance of about 19 miles and vertical rise of approximately 4,100 feet.
