Itinerary:

For this morning's early hike, we're combining an easy, flat hike on the boardwalk with a woodsy, hilly, more challenging hike through Vickery Creek.  The combination hike will total about 9 miles.  Because the heat index will rise as the sun gets higher in the sky, we'll start the hike on the boardwalk portion which is more exposed to the sun.  When we move into Vickery Creek via Riviera Drive, we'll have lots of trees to protect us on our trek.

The boardwalk section of the hike will take us under Atlanta Road along the sidewalk to the entrance of the boardwalk.  We'll stay on the boardwalk until we reach the Chattahoochee Nature Center, where we'll turn around and retrace our steps back to the Riverside Park parking lot.  Folks can get hiking poles and extra water out of their cars here and take a bathroom break before we begin the Vickery Creek portion of the hike.

We'll cross Riverside Road at Riviera Drive take a counter-clockwise route through Vickery Creek.  Vickery Creek offers a variety of trails and routes, covered bridge, beautiful views of the water along the creek and at the dam, and occasional glimpses of wildlife.  We'll keep a moderate pace with brief pauses for water along the way.

The trails at Vickery Creek are not easy.  There are several hills as well as trails with lots of roots and rocks that would prove very challenging for inexperienced hikers. If you have no record with the AOC, we will email you to make sure you aren't getting in over your head on your first event! Recent D2+ experience to join the fun. If you can't handle 9 miles distance, or you can't maintain a moderate pace on hilly terrain, you don't want to register for this event!  This is definitely NOT a hike for beginners!

Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for socializing and introductions.
