Itinerary:

If you've ever wanted to gently paddle with the tide along an estuary tunneling through a mangrove canopy or sit by a fire on the beach of a small island watching the sun go down over the ocean or finally, explore reefs filled with rainbows of exotic fish, this is the adventure for you. This is a two part trip with 3 days, 2 nights exploring the Ten Thousand Islands off the southwest coast of Florida and then driving to Southeast Florida to explore the reefs of John PenneKamp Coral Reef State Park.

These dates were pickedd base on the most favorable tides going out and coming back to launch.

UP TO 8 PEOPLE WILL BE SELECTED FOR THIS TRIP (SEE CRITERIA BELOW)

Thursday, January 12, Fly to Ft. Myers Florida and be picked up to drive an hour to Collier-Seminole State Park and camp overnight. Trip leaders will have driven down from Atlanta the day before.

Friday, January 13, Our rented kayaks will be delivered at the launching site at the Park. We'll get an early start with the tides and paddle the morning on the Blackwater River meandering 4 miles through the mangroves to Mud Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands. We'll cross the bay and skirt some small island another 4 miles to eat lunch at the Crabby Lady in the old fishing village of Goodland. Then we will paddle 6 miles between the islands and the ocean to White Horse Key where we will camp on the small beach (chances are exclusively) for the night.

Saturday January 14, Spend the day meandering the islands and along the sea 6 miles to Tiger Key. Tiger Key is a designated camping site and requires a permit which we will secure ahead of time. We'll probably meet a few other campers there.

Sunday, January 15, we will make are way to Sandfly Island to explore this interesting destination and then make are way to Chocolaskee Island to eat lunch and turn over the kayaks. We will then drive about 1.5 hrs. to Homestead to stay in a Hotel about 25 miles from Pennekamp.  May do a little nightlife near Miami.

Monday, January 16. We will drive the short distance to Pennekamp and do a half day of snorkeling on an excursion to the reefs. Explore Pennekamp beaches. Return to hotel for the night.

Tuesday, January 17, drive back to Ft Myers for flight out to Atlanta. 2.5 hr. drive.

Mosquitos and noseums are minimal in January, but still need bug spray.

PARTCIPANTS SHOULD BE IN FAIRLY GOOD SHAPE AND HAVE SOME BASIC KAYAK EXPERIENCE.

IF DESIRED WE CAN HAVE A KAYAK REFRESHER COARSE IN NOVEMBER ON A NEARBY RIVER AND/0R LAKE.
