Itinerary:

Falls

Our total elevation gain for the hike will clear the 1500 feet needed for a D4.

This hike includes a 700 foot climb of the stairs which places this section in the company of the most strenuous hills of the Appalachian Trail in the South (Cheah, Wesser, Albert, Kelly).

Is it worth it?  The USA Today newspaper ranks these falls as amongst the 3 tallest falls east of the Mississippi and we get to enjoy hiking on the stairs over them for almost a mile.  What better way to efficiently achieve a D4 level workout?

After the stairs we proceed further up Amicalola Mountain to High Shoals Road where it is a short walk to the west to the Hickory Flatts Pavillion for lunch.

When you arrive at the Park, you will see something missing.  The former Visitor Center is gone and a brand new larger and better one is a construction project at present.  We will meet there at the temporary visitor center trailer.

After huddling, we will proceed through the arch marking the gateway to the Appalachian Trail and take the trail to the stairs.

If you do not have recent D4 or D3 experiance, the trip leader will need to be written with an explanation for why you qualify.

There is a $5.00 State Park Fee per car unless you have an annual park pass.
