This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The Benton MacKaye Trail is a nearly 300 mile long trail starting at Springer Mountain, weaving through Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina before ending in the GSMNP just past Big Creek. Often considered more difficult than the adjacent sections of the AT, this trail presents plenty of challenge and adventure. Join me as I dayhike the BMT, one section at a time.

This hike will find us in the Cohutta Wilderness in Georgia. We will start at Dyer Gap. We will park on the side of the road just past the Dyer Cemetery. As we start our adventure, we are greeted by a 900 foot climb in the first 1.5 miles as we scale Flat Top Mountain. We should be able to find the remnants of the fire tower that used to adorn this mountain. After this climb we will be mostly on a ridge with ups and downs and plenty of wildflowers as we make our way to Fowler Mountain. If you were on my Bushey Head BMT hike a few weeks ago, you will recognize Fowler Mountain as our beautiful lunch spot. This will be our lunch spot again and our turn around point. As we retrace our steps back to our cars we will keep an eye out for Black Bears that are known to frequent the area.

This is a difficult D5 hike, recent D5 experience is required to join the fun. Under experienced hikers will be moved to the wait list as they await an email from the TL.
