Itinerary:

The Mount Rogers Loop is an iconic section of the Appalachian Trail. It is located in southwestern Virginia within Jefferson National Forest and crosses over to the bordering Grayson Highlands State Park. The trail offers diversity, from vast mountain views to open fields and dense forests to likely encounters with roaming wild ponies and longhorn cattle.

Day 1: Drive in two cars to Grayson Highlands State Park and park in the backpacking parking log. I have a parking permit for 2 vehicles. We will hike counterclockwise for 5.5 miles to set up camp by a stream.

Day 2: Hike approximately 12 miles to set up camp near Mount Rogers/Thomas Knob Shelter area. Optional summit Mount Rogers.

Day 3: Hike approximately 7 miles. Take our time to explore near Pine Mountain and hike back to the backpacking parking lot. Drive back to Atlanta.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $248.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

You can choose to meet at the backpacking parking lot, but it's your responsibility to obtain your parking permit. I only purchased 2 permits for those who decide to participate in the carpool.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

The backpack parking permit will be divided by the number of participants. It will be minimal. The total cost was $80.
