Itinerary:

This is a beautiful spot in North Georgia. I hope you can make it for this summertime hike and swim. I was here recently for the first time and was so impressed by the easy driving access, short hike (approx 1.5mi) to the swimming hole, and the return hike (about another 2 miles). And yet it is truly an Appalachian experience - that we all so love.

This is a loop trail that starts outside of Ellijay in the Rich Mountain Wilderness Area, and winds down to the Cartecay River. We'll hike to the river, hang out on the rocks for some lunch, swimming, sunning and play and then, as my co-leader knows about this other spot, we'll head to the next - even bigger rock for those who want to jump from the rock into the water. Once we've had enough - probably around 2 and 1/2 hours total - we'll head back to the cars through the woods - probably around a 2 mile hike back to the cars.

My hiking pace is typically moderate with potentially a lot of stops for photography, berry picking, and viewing the scenery. This is a fun, relaxed day and we won't be in a hurry or rush.

Afternoon rain showers can be typical at this time of year, so plan accordingly with a rain jacket, or just plan to be wet and cooled off. Carry a water proof bag for phone and car keys.

Total hike and water play time is approximately 3 hours.

Total drive time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Best guess is that we'll be back at Chastain around 5PM.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Turn right on Chastain, Take 575 North, it becomes 515, stop at the East Elijay McDonalds (on the left at the intersection of Maddox Road and 515) to collect everyone and make sure we make the last few turns together.  This is your bathroom break.

We will continue North on 515 to Route 52, turn right on to Route 52 (there is an Amicalola sign) (the exit is on the right, but when you get to 52 you will take a left).

Your are now heading east on 52 towards Dahlonega.  Continue on 52, make a right on Mulkey Road (just past the Oak Hill United Methodist Church – same side on the road).

Take first right onto Martin, continue down Martin to a gravel road, stay on the gravel road until it dead ends (not very far).  This is the Rich Mountain WMA.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $47.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

You may want to change shoes for the hiking part, and have your water shoes for the river part.

This event is only strenuous based on your water play.
