Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

Yonah is my favorite hike in GA and a great place to celebrate the arrival of fall.   The autumnal equinox will occur at 11:09 PM September 22, 2010, for locations on US Eastern Daylight Time.  So this is the first full day of autumn for those of us in GA.

I've led this hike as a D3, D4, and a D5, depending on the route and pace.  We will make it a D3 today..so expect a moderate pace and will keep the group together for the most part.

We will head up the trail with a detour to The Boulder...then up to the base of the main face where most of the rock climbing occurs.  To get to this area, you have to do some very light scrambling... anyone who isn't comfortable with this section can just wait at the start of it...beautiful view to enjoy and the rest of the group will come back that way.

From there we head to the top with a photoshoot break at the rock outcrop (see pic below)...then over to the south overlook, visit the actual summit, and then to a west overlook to enjoy the sunset.

This is somewhat of a "fair weather" event and will most likely be rescheduled if the chance of rain is too high.  But hopefully we'll get a nice day and can celebrate the start of the fall hiking season in style.
