Itinerary:

The vernal (Spring) equinox this year is at 7:21 PM EDT on March 20th, so what better way to celebrate the official arrival of Spring than with a hike and sunset (+moonrise) at Mount Yonah.

This will be more of a social hike than a fitness hike but you will get some good exercise with the 1500' elevation gain...although just over 2 ½ miles.  That means a steady uphill climb.  But we will keep the pace very moderate for this one.

We will head up the main trail and then take a break at The Boulder...then head higher until we emerge dramatically on the top of the main rockface.

We will check out the south overlook, visit the actual summit (a peaceful grassy clearing), and also maybe go over to the base of the rock climbing wall if conditions are dry enough and if we have time..

At about 7pm, we will head to the classic rock outcrop photo op spot to relax and have dinner.   At 7:21 we can enjoy the official start of Spring and then settle in for hopefully a sweet sunset at 7:49...the sun should set exactly due west on this day with the equinox.

If the conditions are favorable, we will hang out for another hour and try to watch the moonrise at 9:19 PM from an eastern overlook.,.about 1/10 mile of of-trail hiking to get there but it isn't bad and hopefully not too many spider webs out there yet.  But it is a 99.4% illuminated full moon so we don't want to miss it if possible.

We will then head down the mtn... in the dark, so be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight.  We should get back to ATL at around 11:15PM.
