Itinerary:
Moderate 3 miles

No hiking shoes or backpack: no problem. We will hike approximately 3 miles at one Georgia most scenic parks; a definite must see if you have never been. After gathering by the Visitors Center parking lot we will hike the Creek and Mt. Laurel Loop trial, stopping a couple of times at trail intersections. These trails are hilly but have no extended climbs. After this warm up we will come to the highlight of trip, the Base of Fall Trail. This trail runs along the 729 feet Amicalola Falls, the tallest drop east of the Mississippi River, with a bridge crossing the falls at the middle of trail. This trail has 600 steps with the rest of the heavily traveled path paved. Although it is a steep climb, every one can go at their own pace and we will likely encounter many families hiking up the trail with their children. Hiking right alongside Amicalola Falls in truly one of the most spectacular sights any near Atlanta. Once everyone makes it to the top we will gather and rest for a few minutes. Restrooms and drink machines are available here, but no water fountains. We will then hike downhill about one mile on the Appalachian Approach Trail back to the Visitors Center. We should finish sometime around 12:30 PM and we may stop in Dawsonville for an optional late lunch. There are very few rocky or naturally muddy spots on the trail so any type of athletic shoes should be OK. If there are heavy rains preceding the hike conditions will likely be somewhat muddy as most of the trails are dirt. Participants should bring a water bottle but packs are optional because of the relatively short overall distance.
