Itinerary:
Strenuous - 8.8 mile hike (10.5 miles with optional hike to summit of Tray Mountain)

OK let’s try this one again. We didn’t quite make this one in November, but with the days getting longer we should have time to get this one in. Total hiking time should be 5 to 7 hours depending on the pace of the group. This is an in and out hike so there is no car shuttle.

For those that have not hiked the Georgia AT or similar mountain trails, it is not like hiking on the trails within one hour of Atlanta. It’s rocky, it’s muddy, you go up and you go down, with 500 to 1000 foot elevation changes not uncommon. Particularly at the summit of Tray Mountain, it can be very windy.

This hike starts at Unicoi Gap just north of Helen, GA. We will go 4.4 miles on the Appalachian Trail to Tray Gap. It will likely be chilly this day but a 1000-foot climb at the start of the hike will get you warmed up pretty quick. Those with extra energy will have the option of hiking another 1 ½ mile round trip to the summit of Tray Mountain. Along with Blood Mountain, it is the most panoramic view on the Georgia AT. Here you will have 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

You need to be in good shape for this hike. The hike leader will e-mail those he is not personally familiar with to make sure they are suitable for this hike. However most newcomers do well so don’t be afraid to try.
